Barbizon School

Painters gathered at the edge of the Fontainebleau forest, in the village of Barbizon, and began painting outdoors with landscape itself as the subject. Nature, once just the background of a religious scene, became the picture's whole point, opening the door that Impressionism would walk through a generation later.
