Neo-Impressionism

This generation rebuilt Impressionist light using color theory. In A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (1884-86), Seurat laid down countless small dots of pure color and left the mixing to the viewer's eye, a quiet, exacting experiment where science met the painting of sensation. Shown at the last Impressionist exhibition in 1886, this single canvas became the door into the next era.
