Rococo

The heavy solemnity of the Baroque grew lighter, more private. Pale colors, curling lines, scenes of love, play, and nature. This was when painting's home shifted from the royal court to the aristocrat's private chamber. Some see it as an exaggeration of one strand within the Baroque; others treat it as a fully independent style, and the question is still unsettled. This map calls it a branch, without claiming to settle it.
