Romanesque

Thick walls, round arches, a dark and quiet nave. Stone churches rose one after another along the roads pilgrims walked. The name "Romanesque" was coined in the 19th century. The archaeologist Gerville used it in a letter, meaning something like "degenerate Roman." Once again, a style's name begins as an insult.
